Entry requirements overview

Ghana welcomes visitors and prospective residents from across the globe, but navigating entry requirements can feel overwhelming without a clear roadmap. Whether you're arriving on a tourist visa with plans to extend or applying for residency from abroad, understanding the process upfront saves time and reduces stress.

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply through the Ghana Immigration Service online portal. It's worth checking the current bilateral agreements between Ghana and your home country, as these can significantly affect both cost and processing time.

Visa types and which one fits you

Ghana offers several visa categories depending on your purpose of stay. The most common for relocators are the Tourist Visa (valid up to 60 days), the Resident Permit for those employed or running a business, and the Indefinite Residence Permit for long-term settlers.

If you're moving for work, your employer typically sponsors your work permit application. Self-employed individuals and entrepreneurs will apply through a separate business-related pathway. Understanding which category applies to you early on prevents costly re-applications.

  1. 01Tourist Visa — up to 60 days, extendable once
  2. 02Work Permit — employer-sponsored, tied to your role
  3. 03Investor Visa — requires proof of business registration and capital
  4. 04Indefinite Residence Permit — for long-term residents after qualifying years
  5. 05ECOWAS card — valid for West African nationals

Documents to prepare before you arrive

Preparation is everything. Immigration officials will expect a consistent, well-organised set of documents. Incomplete applications are a leading cause of delays, so building your file thoroughly before your appointment is essential.

Beyond the core documents, keep certified copies of everything—originals get misplaced, and embassies frequently request additional copies at short notice.

  1. 01Valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining validity)
  2. 02Passport-sized photographs meeting Ghana's specifications
  3. 03Proof of accommodation (lease, hotel booking, or sponsor letter)
  4. 04Return or onward travel ticket
  5. 05Evidence of sufficient funds (bank statements, 3 months minimum)
  6. 06Employment or business registration documents if applicable
  7. 07Medical insurance valid for Ghana

Extending your stay after arrival

If you arrive on a tourist visa and decide Ghana is home, you can apply for an extension through the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) office in Accra or your regional capital. Extensions are typically granted for a further 30–60 days.

Starting your residency application while on a valid visa, rather than after it has expired, is strongly recommended. Overstaying, even by a few days, can result in fines and complications with future applications.

Practical tips from people who have done it

Work with a licensed immigration consultant if your situation is complex—dual nationalities, prior refusals, or business structures can add layers that are hard to navigate solo.

Keep digital and physical copies of every document you submit and every receipt you receive. The process can take weeks, and having records makes follow-ups far smoother.

Join expatriate communities online and in Accra. Real-time, lived experience from others who recently went through the process is often more current than official guidance.
